Example Use Case

Check whether a database TEXT column fits an encoded file, or work out exactly how long an API payload will be before sending it.

Real-time Processing

All processing happens locally in your browser. Large files are handled in memory and never uploaded to any server.

Base64 Length Calculator

Work out exact Base64 sizes with our Base64 Length Calculator. In analyze mode, paste any Base64 string to get its total character count, data versus padding split, decoded byte and bit size, and the encoding overhead percentage. In predict mode, enter a raw byte count to learn exactly how long the encoded string will be, including padding and storage to reserve. Ideal for sizing database columns, validating API payload limits, and planning text capacity before a single byte is encoded. Everything runs instantly and locally in your browser.

Why This Tool Exists

What makes this useful — and why I built it this way.

Exact Numbers: Character, byte, and bit counts with no guessing.

Two Directions: Measure existing strings or forecast new ones.

Overhead Visibility: See the ~33% Base64 tax up front.

Planning Ready: Storage figures map straight to column sizes.

Local Processing: Input never leaves your browser.

When You'd Use This

Real situations where this tool saves the day.

Database Design: Size TEXT and VARCHAR columns for encoded files.

API Limits: Confirm payloads fit request size caps before sending.

Email Systems: Predict attachment growth for size-restricted relays.

Embedded Targets: Budget flash space for encoded certificates.

Code Reviews: Verify size assumptions in encoding pipelines.

Using Base64 Length Calculator

It's straightforward — here's how it works.

Step 1

Choose Analyze Base64 or Predict from Bytes mode.

Step 2

Paste a Base64 string or type a byte count.

Step 3

Click Process to generate the length report.

Step 4

Use the figures for capacity and limit planning.

Questions People Ask

Honest answers about how this works.

Why is Base64 about 33% larger than the raw data?

Base64 packs 3 bytes into 4 printable characters, which is a fixed 4/3 ratio before padding. One or two '=' characters may add a byte or two on top, which the calculator breaks out separately so the overhead is fully transparent.

Does my input leave the browser?

No. All counting and math runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored, so proprietary payloads and confidential sizes never touch a server.

How is the decoded size computed without decoding?

The math is exact: floor(total characters × 3 / 4) minus padding characters. Every 4 Base64 characters always represent 3 bytes, so no decoding step is needed for the size.

What byte counts can the predict mode handle?

Any whole number up to JavaScript's safe integer limit, far beyond any realistic payload. Commas and surrounding spaces are ignored, so values like 1,048,576 paste directly.
