What is padding used for?
Padding ensures every entry in a column has the same character length, which matters for fixed-width file formats, aligned text tables, and systems that reject variable-length fields. Adding zeros or spaces to the start or end of each line keeps your data consistent.
Does my data leave the browser?
No. Text Padding applies character rules locally in your browser. Sensitive lists such as account numbers, student IDs, or payroll records are never transmitted or stored, and the padded output is available the moment you apply the settings to your list.
What happens to lines longer than the target length?
Lines that already exceed your target length are never truncated. By default they stay exactly as they are, so no data is lost; you can also choose to keep them untouched while shorter lines are padded up to the target width.
Why is my padded column still misaligned?
Mixed tab characters or existing trailing spaces usually throw alignment off. Trim whitespace first, make sure every line uses the same padding character, and set one consistent target length across the whole list, then copy the result into your document.
